Lip Tattoo Melbourne

Getting a lip tattoo in Melbourne (also referred to as semi-permanent makeup) involves a delicate and precise process where pigment is implanted into the outer layer of your upper lip skin using a high-end tattoo machine. Unlike a traditional body tattoo, the tattooing process here is light touch and shallow – perfect for giving your lips a subtle, all-natural looking colour that will easily get you through a busy work day or a night out on the town.

All about lip tattooing

Let’s face it, being in Melbourne can be tough on your lipstick. We’ve got unpredictable weather, coffee on-the-go and dry winter air that will have you reaplying your lip colour all day, every day. That’s where a cosmetic lip tattoo comes in – at Face Figurati, I’ve been doing lip tattoos in Melbourne for years now, helping my clients ditch the lipstick smudges and achieve a soft, all-natural coloured lip that will keep going all the way through brunch at Hardware Lane and a night out on the town.

In simple terms, a lip tattoo (semi-permanent makeup) is a form of cosmetic tattoo that involves implanting pigment into the top layer of your lips. Unlike a traditional tattoo, the pigment doesn’t go all the way through; it just sits just under the surface of your skin, which gives it that natural-looking finish that doesn’t look like a bold tattoo at all.

Over here at Permanent Makeup Melbourne Studio Face Figurati, I use a top-of-the-line digital tattoo machine with tiny needles that implant the pigment in a way that is utterly precise. This way, the colour will stick, but you won’t get any scarring or trauma – even with Melbourne’s crazy weather swings from hot to cold. I also adjust my technique and pigment tone to ensure that the colour will last all year round.

Like any beauty treatment, there are some pros and cons of getting a lip tattoo. Let’s go over them, no sugarcoating.

Pros:

  • A long-lasting lip colour that will last through the morning coffee and won’t smudge or fade.
  • Defines and balances out any asymmetrical lip shapes.
  • Great for people who have naturally faded lip colour from age or too much sun exposure.
  • Saves you heaps of time in the mornings and simplifies your beauty routine – a lifesaver in this crazy city, Melbourne.
  • A great option for people who are allergic to lipstick ingredients.

Cons:

  • A bit of swelling or flaking is totally normal while the tattoo is healing.
  • Everyone heals differently – if you’ve got oily skin, your lip tattoo may fade faster than someone with dry skin.
  • We do need to do a follow-up “perfecting visit” to get the best results.
  • Pigment does naturally fade with time – but that’s actually a pretty good thing, because you don’t want a lip colour that is too bold and unnatural feeling.

The secret to getting the most out of your lip tattoo, as with any cosmetic treatment, is to understand how to look after it properly in the days and weeks after, which we’ll get to soon.

As a tattoo artist, my number one priority is your safety. Not everyone is ready for a permanent lip tattoo.

You should postpone or avoid the treatment if you:

  • Are pregnant or breastfeeding
  • Have active cold sores or herpes simplex outbreaks
  • Are undergoing chemotherapy or taking blood thinners
  • Have skin infections, open wounds or severe acne near the mouth
  • Recently had lip fillers (wait at least 4 weeks before tattooing)
  • Have keloid-forming skin or severe allergies to pigments

When in doubt, I always recommend a patch test and, if needed, clearance from your GP or dermatologist.

If you’ve noticed your lips looking paler or less defined over time, or you just want to simplify your daily routine, this could be the perfect fit.

Ideal candidates are:

  • Have naturally light or uneven lip tone
  • Want a natural tint that still allows for clear lip definition
  • Don’t want to wear heavy lipstick or liner every day
  • Are comfortable following healing and aftercare instructions
  • Have realistic expectations — it’s an enhancement, not a colour replacement

Clients come to my Melbourne studio from busy professionals to new mums — all wanting colour that stays true even with minimal effort. If your lip skin looks dull or uneven, cosmetic tattooing lips can bring it back to life with a tint that’s yours.

Forget the dated solid “lipstick block” tattoos that used to be all the rage back in the 90s – those were a far cry from the modern cosmetic tattooing you can get today. With our techniques, we focus on creating a more natural look that blends with your own personal undertones, rather than trying to overpower them.

Lip Blush Tattoo

At Face Figurati, our clients love the lip blush tattoo because it uses soft, delicate shading to give a pretty, airbrushed look on the lips. It’s like having a really good lip stain that never fades or gets all over your clothes. It’s perfect for people who want a low-key look that doesn’t fade quickly.

Lip Liner Tattoo

If you’ve got problem lip edges, then our lip liner tattoo is the answer – I can subtly blend the liner into the lip, and make it look seamless – no more harsh “drawn on” effect

Ombre Lip Tattoo

Want fuller lips without the need for lip fillers? Our ombre lip tattoo is the way to go – I create a gradient of colour from outer to centre to give a really natural 3D look.

Dark Lip Neutralisation

If you’ve got darker or really cool-toned lips, then I use special “dark lip neutralization” technique orange or coral-based pigments to neutralise the undertones before I even start to add the colour you want. It’s a bit more complicated than some of the other techniques, but the end result is totally worth it – a perfectly even, warm and natural colour.

Aquarelle Lips Tattoo

If you love the watercolour look, then our aquarelle lips tattoo is the one for you – I use special translucent pigments to create a delicate, sheer look that looks like you’re wearing barely there makeup.

Lipstick Tattoo

If you’re a fan of a more defined lip, then our lipstick tattoo is the way to go – I build up the colour slowly to avoid it looking too bright or shiny, and it leaves you with a smooth, velvety finish.

Good preparation sets you up for smooth healing and long-lasting colour. Here’s what I tell every client before their session:

A Week Before

  • Start using a gentle lip scrub and hydrating balm twice a day.
  • Avoid chemical peels, laser or active skincare (AHA/BHA, retinol) near your mouth.
  • If you get cold sores, start an antiviral medication (like Valtrex) 48 hours before the procedure.

24 Hours Before

  • No alcohol, caffeine or blood-thinning medications.
  • Keep lips clean and makeup-free.
  • Drink plenty of water — hydrated skin accepts pigment better.

On The Day

  • Arrive with healthy, unchapped lips.
  • Bring your favourite lipstick for colour comparison (it helps me match your perfect shade).

In my studio, each session starts with a full analysis of your lip skin, undertone and natural symmetry. We chat about your makeup habits, favourite shades and how your lips behave seasonally. This helps me determine not just the colour but also the technique — whether you’d suit a lip blush, lipstick, tattoo, or aquarelle lips finish.

A full lip tattoo procedure at Face Figurati takes around 2-3 hours. It’s detailed work, and precision is key.

  • Consultation: We chat about your colour goals and review any health or skin concerns.
  • Mapping & Design: I draw your perfect shape using your natural symmetry as a guide.
  • Numbing: A topical anaesthetic keeps you comfortable.
  • Tattooing Process: I build colour gradually — soft passes for even saturation.
  • Post-Care Guidance: I’ll explain your personal healing plan and give you a take-home aftercare kit.

Immediately after, your lips will look up to 60% darker than the healed shade. Don’t panic, this is normal and temporary.

Here’s where the magic (and patience) happens. Lip tattoo healing is what determines your final result, and it unfolds in several clear stages.

DayWhat’s HappeningWhat To Do
1Lips appear bold, swollen, and slightly tenderApply a cold compress, and avoid touching
2–3Swelling subsides, pigment darkensKeep lips clean and dry, and avoid oily foods
3–5Light peeling or flaking beginsDon’t pick! Apply healing balm 2–3 times daily
6–10Lips look faded and patchyTotally normal — pigment is settling under the skin
10–21Colour resurfaces and evens outKeep hydrated, avoid heavy lip products
4–6 weeksFully healed and colour stabilisedReady for your perfecting session

Every Melbourne client heals differently – the cold months seem to slow things down a bit due to the dry air, while the summer heat can actually speed up the exfoliation process. I always tell clients that patience is key, you know, because the payoff is worth it.

This is a pretty short version of my aftercare mantra: just remember to hydrate, protect and let things be.

Do:

  • Apply that aftercare balm I give you 2-3 times a day – it makes a big difference.
  • Drink lots and lots of water.
  • Try to sleep on your back for a bit so that you don’t irritate the area with friction.
  • Use a straw for a few days, just to be on the safe side.

Don’t:

  • Don’t go picking at the flakes or trying to get rid of them – that just makes things worse.
  • No lip gloss, lipstick or harsh exfoliating products for at least a week or so.
  • Try to keep your lips out of the sun, sauna or pool for at least ten days – it really makes a difference.

If you stick to this, you’ll be amazed at the difference it makes.

Generally speaking, a semi-permanent lip tattoo will last you about two to three years (though some people might experience better results depending on their skin, sun exposure and how well they take care of themselves). Lighter shades like nudes and pinks tend to fade a bit faster, while deeper colours hold up better.

In Melbourne, the sun’s pretty strong even on cloudy days, so I always recommend using a lip SPF balm every day. Regular moisturising also helps keep the colour looking good and prevents the skin from cracking, which can cause the pigment to lift.

Pain levels can vary, but most people describe it as a pretty mild discomfort – helped a lot by the medical-grade numbing creams we use. It’s more of a vibration sensation or a tickly feeling than actual pain – some people might feel a bit more sensitive around the cupid’s bow or the corners, but that’s pretty temporary.

Afterwards, your lips might feel a bit warm or tight – like a mild sunburn. A nice soothing balm can help, and that usually sorts itself out within 24 hours.

Minor redness, swelling or tightness is normal for the first 24-48 hours. Sometimes small pigment spots or flaking may occur as the skin renews.

Contact your artist or GP if you notice:

  • Persistent swelling or discharge
  • Blistering beyond mild peeling
  • Intense pain or signs of infection

At Face Figurati, all procedures are performed under strict hygiene protocols using TGA-approved pigments and sterile, single-use equipment — minimising risk.

Skin isn’t a one-size-fits-all surface. Oil levels, thickness and hydration all affect pigment retention.

  • Dry skin: Holds pigment best but needs consistent moisture post-tattoo.
  • Oily skin: Can cause faster pigment fading; I deepen tones slightly to balance.
  • Mature skin: Thinner and more delicate — requires softer pressure and slower layering.
  • Normal skin: Usually the easiest to work with — predictable healing and strong colour stability.

Understanding these variables is part of the art. That’s why no two lip tattoos heal the same, even if the technique and pigment are the same.

Choosing the right colour isn’t just about picking your favourite lipstick shade — it’s a combination of skin science, undertones and pigment chemistry.

Pigments used for cosmetic tattooing of the lips are mineral or organic compounds specifically formulated for the delicate lip skin. At Face Figurati, I only use EU and TGA-approved brands, which means they’re hypoallergenic, vegan and fade evenly over time.

Your natural skin tone plays a big part in how the final colour heals.

  • Cool undertones (pink or bluish): Look best with warm corals, peaches and rosewoods.
  • Neutral undertones: Look stunning with soft pinks, beige rose and mauve.
  • Warm undertones (golden or olive): Flatter with caramel, terracotta or nude blush tones.
  • Deep skin tones: Shine with brick, mocha or warm berry pigments.

Lip pigment tends to behave a bit differently to those from our brow tattooing or eyeliner, which is because the skin around your lips. Lip pigment tends to behave a bit differently from that of our brow or eyeliner tattoos, which is because the skin around your lips is both thin skin and very rich with tiny blood vessels. During the healing process, the colour may look a bit dull or milky before it settles in – and that’s completely normal. I personally always keep an eye out for how pigments oxidise and how the underlying skin tone shifts – so that by the time your tattooed lips have fully healed, they match your natural complexion.
That’s why we say that our lip tint tattoos give you exactly the colour we promised, no ashy tones, no weird orange or grey looks.

Yes, they are – as long as they’re done by a qualified tattoo artist using properly sterilised equipment and TGA-approved pigments.
Lip blush gives you a soft, gradient-like tint, whereas a lip tint will give you a more even, balm-like colour.
Absolutely – it just might fade a bit faster, so I’ll take that into account when I’m applying the pigment to suit your skin type.

Do a bit of legwork and research – look for qualified cosmetic tattoo specialists who are proud of their aftercare routines, properly certified in hygiene, and transparent about what to expect from your treatment.
