Lipstick Tattoo Melbourne

Forget the harsh, blocky pigments of the past that used to be a part of cosmetic tattooing. Today’s lipstick tattoo – sometimes called ‘full lip colour tattoo‘ – uses ultra-fine digital needles along with custom-mixed pigments to give you a soft finish & a semi-permanent version of your favourite lipstick shade.

At Permanent Makeup Melbourne Studio Face Figurati, I’ve worked with hundreds of clients who’ve had enough of applying lip products that constantly smudge, fade or bleed. A lipstick tattoo gives you a consistent, defined and naturally enhanced colour every day, whether that’s on a rush to work, running to brunch or a gym trip.

All about lipstick tattooing

A lipstick tattoo (also called tattooed lipstick) is a semi-permanent cosmetic treatment that uses a digital cosmetic tattoo machine to implant pigment not too deeply into the upper layers of the lip skin. The technique gives you full lipstick coverage – not just a subtle tint like lip blush, but a richer, more defined look.

Think of it a bit like having your favourite lipstick shade tattooed onto your lips with high-quality and hypoallergenic pigments that will fade evenly over time. The result is smoother and fuller-looking lips with a colour that will last for years to come.

Unlike the traditional fine line tattoo methods, the lipstick tattoo technique uses very delicate passes and controlled depth. The pigment is put in gently, which protects the skin condition and minimises the trauma involved. It’s cosmetic tattooing, not body art – a more advanced, skin-safe process that’s designed to enhance your beauty, not bold ink.

Over the hundreds of cosmetic lip tattooing procedures I’ve done across Melbourne, I’ve seen how truly transformative this treatment can be.

Here’s what makes the tattoo lipstick treatment so appealing:

  • Smudge-proof confidence: No more re-applying after every meal or drink.
  • Perfect symmetry: Enhances your natural lip contour so your facial features are balanced and even.
  • Colour correction: Evens out lighter skin tones or darker skin tones where pigmentation is uneven.
  • Hydration illusion: Creates a healthy, smooth look even on drier skin types.
  • Time saving: Ideal for busy people who want to wake up looking ready to go.

It’s also a brilliant choice for clients with poor skin regeneration, compromised skin barriers, or mild skin sensitivities who want a bit of colour without having to rely on daily makeup.

Even for a permanent makeup tattoo treatment, having realistic expectations is a good idea. A lip tattoo lipstick procedure comes with a few minor downsides:
  • A bit of mild swelling and tenderness after the procedure
  • Temporary peeling during the healing process
  • A second session (touch-up) is usually needed to get the full pigment saturation.
  • Not ideal for clients with certain medical conditions or recent skin treatments.
As a cosmetic tattoo artist, I’ll always review your medical form and discuss the potential risks during the consultation to make sure your skin is ready for tattooing.

This treatment is for anyone who’s sick of faffing with lipstick but still wants to look put together.

I see all sorts of clients — corporate professionals, mums, gym-goers and even brides getting ready for long wedding days. It’s for people who:

  • Have pale or uneven lips
  • Have lost colour definition due to age or fillers
  • Want permanent lip makeup that looks professional and polished
  • Struggle with dry lips or sensitivity to makeup ingredients
  • Want subtle enhancement without changing their natural lip shape

For dark skin tones, the treatment can even correct pigmentation or cool undertones with warm neutralising pigments. And for light skin tones, it adds the kind of colour that makes you look fresh even without a drop of gloss.

There are a few situations where lip tattoo lipstick should be postponed:

  • You have active cold sores or a recent outbreak
  • You’ve had lip fillers in the past 4-6 weeks
  • You’re pregnant or breastfeeding
  • You’re on blood-thinning medication
  • You have poor skin regeneration or compromised skin barriers due to skin treatments
  • You’re allergic to numbing agents or pigments

If unsure, I always recommend booking a consultation first. We’ll go through your medical form, discuss your current skincare routine and plan the timing carefully to protect your skin.

Getting ready for your cosmetic tattoo procedure is about setting your lips up to get the best results from the get-go. One Week Before

Getting ready for your cosmetic tattoo procedure is about setting your lips up to get the best results from the get-go.

One Week Before

The week before your session, it’s all about rehydrating your lips. Drink plenty of water and slather on a nourishing lip balm every day. Avoid anything that dries your lips out, which means steer clear of strong retinoids or alcohol. And if you get cold sores, you’ll want to start your antiviral medication 2–3 days in advance – that’s Zovirax or Valtrex for those in the know.

Two Days Before

Give your lips a gentle exfoliation with a sugar scrub or damp washcloth. That gets rid of dead skin cells and helps them absorb the colour better. Just avoid doing any heavy skin treatments or using acids around your mouth area, okay?

On The Day

Turn up to your appointment with clean, product-free lips. Do eat beforehand – your session is gonna take around three hours. I’ll run you through your colour options, take a look at your skin tone and how your natural pigment responds to different shades.

At this point, we’ll sort out the final colour selection and shape design. I’m all about tailoring the pigment to your undertones – warmer corals for people with fair skin, mauves and berries for olive skin, and rich rosewood hues for people with deeper tones.

I’ll also take a close look at your skin condition – whether it’s oily, dry or sensitive – so I can tweak the pigment formula and application pressure to get the best result.

Here’s how I do the lipstick lip tattoo in my Melbourne studio:

  • Consultation and design: We start by drawing out your natural lip shape and symmetry – you’ll see a pencil sketch first, and nothing gets underway until you’re happy with the design.
  • Getting numb: I use a topical anaesthetic to keep you comfortable. Most people find it to be a mild scratching or vibration sensation.
  • Pigment application: I use a digital cosmetic tattoo device to layer the colour on in soft passes – that way, you get even saturation.
  • Final check: Once the tattoo is complete, we take a look at it in the natural light to make sure the shape and tone are just right.

The whole cosmetic tattooing process takes around 2.5 to 3 hours, and when you leave, you’ll have lips that look bold, smooth and slightly puffy – but still beautifully shaped.

Healing is where the magic happens. Over the first month, your lips will go through a few distinct stages – and don’t worry, they’re all completely normal.

Day RangeAppearanceSensationPigment Visibility
Day 1–2Bright, bold, and slightly swollenFeels tight, tingling, warm100% visible
Day 3–4Flaking begins, uneven patchesDry, itchyAppears 40–50% lighter
Day 5–7Peeling finishes, lips smooth againMild dryness60–70% visible
Week 2New skin formsFeels normal70–80% visible
Week 3–4Final colour emergesFully healed90–100% pigment settled

During the wound lip healing phase, try to leave your lips alone – no touching, picking or putting on lipstick. Let them get the healing time they need – rushing in or meddling can lead to uneven healing or, in extreme cases, losing the pigment altogether.

Once your body art lip design is finished, you’re onto the aftercare phase. Along with sending out a step-by-step aftercare guide, I also give every client a travel-sized pack of healing balm to keep their lips nice and hydrated through these tricky first few days.

  • For the first 48 hours, just keep your lips clean and dry – no messing about.
  • Use the healing balm I provided with your clean fingers 3 or 4 times a day.
  • Stay away from super spicy food and any kissing for 3–5 days.
  • No gym or lounging in a sauna for two weeks, and as for swimming – forget it.
  • Don’t get out in direct sunlight, your lips are far too delicate for that – UV exposure can cause them to fade quicker than you can blink.
  • And please, no picking at any flakes – just let them come off naturally.

This gentle approach makes sure the colour settles at a good rate and you get a consistent end result.

Good aftercare means you get the best colour retention, plus smooth healing, and your lip will look lovely and even – it’s a win-win.

Colour matching is an art form – it’s a fine balance between art and science.

Here at Face Figurati, I only use plant-based, TGA-approved pigments, and they always end up looking vibrant and true right the way through till they fade.

When matching your colour, I take into account your skin tone and lip undertones, plus your general lifestyle.

  • If you have light skin, I usually go for peach or coral, or a soft baby rose for a gorgeous natural look.
  • If you have medium or olive skin, I go for a dusty mauve or a rosy nude, or a lovely blush pink.
  • If your skin is dark, I go for warm browns, rich berry shades or terracotta reds to give you a nice balance.

I also adjust the way I work based on your skin type – if you have oily skin, I tend to work in lighter passes so the pigment doesn’t migrate. If you have dry or combo skin, I use slightly richer colours and go a bit slower so you get the best healing results.

This level of customisation ensures every client ends up with a lip tattoo that looks and feels natural – rather than an afterthought.

About 6–8 weeks after your first appointment, it’s time for your free touch-up.

This is your chance to make sure the colour is evenly spread and get any tweaks to tone if you want it a bit warmer or cooler – some people also like to darken it up slightly or add a bit of extra shine.

Because lips grow back in layers, a second visit ensures the colour stays put for good – skip it and you might end up with uneven healing, especially if your skin regenerates fast or if you have a history of skin issues.

Every semi-permanent cosmetic procedure has its risks – nothing too major, but you should be aware of:

  • possibly getting a bit of swelling or tenderness
  • temporary tightness
  • (rare but) allergic reactions to the ink

If you’ve got skin sensitivities or you’re having other skin treatments done, I’d recommend waiting till your skin is fully recovered before getting a treatment. If your skin barrier is compromised, it can affect how well the ink takes.

At Face Figurati, we take safety very seriously:

  • we use single-use needles and keep our hygiene top-notch
  • we only use TGA-approved inks and sterilised tools
  • and our artists are fully licensed and certified

The lifespan of your permanent lipstick tattoo depends on a few things:

  • Your skin type – oily skin tends to fade a bit faster
  • How well you follow aftercare – your colour will hold a lot better if you follow the rules
  • How much sun exposure you get – UV light definitely makes the colours get lighter over time
  • Your lifestyle – smoking and exfoliating too much can all reduce the lifespan
  • The colour depth you go for – lighter colours tend to fade faster than deeper ones

Most people find they get 2–4 years of good colour before it starts to fade, and I’d usually recommend a colour boost every couple of years to keep things looking their best.

The Lipstick Tattoo technique in Melbourne delivers full colour coverage and a striking, makeup-ready finish. This process is ideal for clients who love the look of perfectly applied lipstick without the need for daily touch-ups. It provides strong pigment saturation and precise definition that lasts for years.

The aquarelle tattoo for lips offers a lighter, more translucent result. It’s designed for clients who prefer a natural, watercolour tint with soft edges instead of the high-impact finish of lipstick tattooing.

The ombre lip tattooing creates a smooth gradient of colour from the centre to the outer edges, giving a fuller appearance while keeping a soft fade. It’s a balanced choice between natural and defined, sitting just below the intensity of lipstick tattooing.

The lip neutralization technique is often performed before lipstick tattooing for clients with cool or uneven tones. This process helps balance undertones so that bold colours heal evenly and maintain vibrancy over time.

During your consultation in Melbourne, your artist will discuss the best technique for your tone, lifestyle, and preferred level of colour intensity — from soft tints to fully defined lips.
